EAA-Experts are faces of the campaign "EU protects"

Vienna, 17. April 2019

Thousands of people from different European countries work together to protect EU citizens, e.g. in terms of health and the environment. Every day, the EU supports and connects these people and helps them to work together across borders. Under the motto "EU protects", these heroes are presented, including three experts from the Environment Agency Austria.

Monika Denner

leads the team for consulting & studies in the laboratory of the Environment Agency Austria. Together with her colleagues and in close cooperation with external partners, she works on various international projects, for example PureAlps. The project helps to protect the Alps from polluting substances. Through her work and input from project partners, Monika delivers unique data and important insights into the impact of pollution on the ecosystem worldwide. As part of the EU Water Initiative Plus for the Eastern Partnership, Monika and her colleagues provide training for laboratories in the partner countries Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova, Belarus and Ukraine, and conduct comparative tests. As a result, uniform methods of determining water quality can be applied in the partner countries.

Bettina Liebmann

is a consultant for environmental analysis and a leading expert in the field of microplastics. To harmonize microplastic analysis at the European level, it is a member of the European network of reference laboratories for the monitoring of new environmental pollutants (Norman Network). In the Environment Agency Austria, she implements new measuring methods and dedicates herself to the occurrence of microplastics in the environment, in consumer products and in the human organism in national and international research projects. As co-author of a study on microplastics for the European Commission, she helped lay the groundwork for a possible ban on microplastics in the EU. Through her work, she provides scientific evidence to protect EU citizens and the environment.

Markus Leitner

is an expert in environmental impact assessment and climate change at the Environment Agency Austria. He is the work package leader in the EU-funded Horizon 2020 project PLACARD (PLAt for Climate Adaptation and Risk ReDuction). PLACARD creates the knowledge and exchange platform between researchers and other stakeholder groups on climate change adaptation and natural hazard prevention in Europe. As a result, Markus helps every day to bring together the various stakeholder groups, to exchange ideas and to further improve cooperation.
