EUWI+ in Figures: 6 Countries, 6 Maps
Since 2016, the cross-country project EUWI+ (European Union Water Initiative Plus) has been setting new standards in water resources management in the eastern EU neighborhood. New country maps show key regional milestones at a glance.
Over the past five years, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova, Belarus and Ukraine have come a big step closer to implementing the European Water Framework Directive. A team of international experts, including those from Umweltbundesamt, the Environment Agency Austria, supported the countries administrations as part of the EUWI+ (European Union Water Initiative Plus) project. New country maps show the milestones in water policy and water quality monitoring. They record progress on water management plans, monitoring expansion, stakeholder events and workshops.
The country maps also provide an overview of the measures implemented. Taking Ukraine as an example, the map shows that surface and groundwater investigations were carried out at a total of 13 sites in the river basins. Moreover, the first part of the management plan for the Dnieper River has been completed. More than 20 million people live in its catchment area, which covers 300,000 km² and is thus larger than most European countries.
Over 1000 knowledge products
The above mentioned example represents only a tiny part of the EUWI+ results. On the EUWI+ Webpage, detailed summaries for each country can be found.
In the summer of 2021, after five years of intensive collaboration with water experts from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova, Belarus and Ukraine, the European Water Initiative Plus (EUWI+) project will come to an end. During this time, eight management plans for large and small river basins were newly prepared and three were revised. In addition, reforms in water policy were achieved and the responsible institutions were supported with dozens of trainings and more than 100 analytical instruments. They now meet the requirements of the EU Water Framework Directive and provide the basis for adequate water management.
EUWI+ is funded by the European Union and implemented by the Organisation for Economid Co-operation and Development (OECD), the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and an EU Member States consortium comprised of the Environment Agency Austria and the International Office for Water (France).
