Soil Mission Support: Successful Completion
For two years, European partners have been working together on the topics of sustainable soil and land management as part of the Soil Mission Support (SMS) initiative. The results of this cooperation were presented on 27 September at a final conference organized by the Umweltbundesamt, the Environment Agency Austria.
Bringing together soil and land use actors to support the Horizon Europe Mission “A Soil Deal for Europe” with comprehensive activities: this was the goal of the Soil Mission Support (SMS) initiative. For this, ongoing research projects in the areas of soil health and land management were jointly analyzed, the coordination of research and innovation (R&I) needs was improved and potential gaps were identified. Furthermore, goal oriented criteria for Living Labs and Lighthouses were defined and an R&I Roadmap towards healthy soils by 2030 was developed. A living platform was developed for the continuous implementation and further development of this roadmap.
After two years of cooperation, the results of the initiative's work were now presented and discussed at a final conference in Brussels organized by the Umweltbundesamt, the Environment Agency Austria. This included the status quo of the developed R&I Roadmap, its practical applications in the years ahead as well as best practice examples of Living Labs and Lighthouses. Furthermore, soil and land use actors shared their ideas about the future of the European landscape and soils through interactive exercises and panel discussions with representatives of the European Commission.
