In "Austria's Annual Greenhouse Gas Inventory 1990–2009" the Umweltbundesamt presents up-to-date figures of greenhouse gas emissions in Austria. In 2009, the second year of the 1st commitment period under the Kyoto-Protocol, greenhouse gas emissions amounted to 80.1 million t of CO2 equivalents. This corresponds to a 2.5% increase against base-year levels and a 7.8% reduction below 2008 levels. The driving forces behind the emission trend 2008-2009 were the economic crisis - affecting industrial production (steel, cement), power generation and road performance (freight transport) – and the increased use of biofuels.
