This report describes the state-of-the-art of particle board and fibre
board manufacturing facilities, including plants in Austria and
Luxembourg. The emphasis is on the production processes, the raw
materials used and the products, as well as on plant-specific emissions
associated with the different manufacturing processes and relevant
emission reduction measures.
In Austria, 2.2 million m3 of particle board, 0.7 million m3 of MDF board
(medium density fibre board) and approximately 70,000 t of fibre board
are produced every year. Production stages with a high environmental
impact are: chip or fibre drying, pressing, paper impregnation and
firing installations.
Emission reduction technologies are also demonstrated, together
with the level of emissions achievable through such measures, for the
following pollutants: dust, organic carbon compounds, formaldehyde,
organic acids, phenol, nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide.
